There you have it. This week alone — Colorado, Alabama, Kentucky, and California all advanced separate AI regulation bills. Different rules. Different compliance regimes. Different definitions of what AI even is.

50 states. 50 frameworks. Zero coordination.

America is about to do to AI what Europe did to tech — and we all know how that ended. The EU spent 20 years regulating its way into complete irrelevance. GDPR, the AI Act, the DSA — a mountain of paperwork and a continent of startups that moved to the US to actually build things. Europe is now a museum of what happens when bureaucrats lead innovation policy.

We are one federal AI failure away from doing the same thing to ourselves.

While Colorado debates chatbot disclosure laws, Beijing is deploying AI across every government ministry, every supply chain, every military function — with zero friction. Zero 50-state compliance checklists. Zero waiting for the 47th public comment period to close.

This is EXACTLY how America loses. Not in a lab. Not on a battlefield. In a conference room full of state legislators who have never shipped a product in their lives.

We do not need 50 AI experiments. We need ONE federal framework — clear, innovation-friendly, and written by people who understand what they are regulating.

The window to get this right is closing. Fast.

I wrote about this in my upcoming book, REPLACEMENT. This is not a warning about the future. It is already happening.
