There you have it! The White House just told federal agencies to remove quantum-vulnerable encryption from high-value and high-impact systems by December 31, 2030.
Digital signatures get until December 31, 2031.
That is Washington admitting the old 2035 timeline was too slow.
Because the threat is not some science-fiction quantum computer someday. The threat is collect now, decrypt later.
China can steal encrypted U.S. data today, store it, and wait for the machine that turns it into readable intelligence.
That should make every agency and contractor uncomfortable.
Old VPNs, forgotten certificates, legacy identity systems, sensitive federal data sitting in archives, procurement systems nobody wants to touch. All of it matters now.
I actually like this order.
It moves the deadline forward 4-5 years and forces agencies to stop treating post-quantum cryptography as a research topic.
NIST finalized the first three standards in August 2024, so nobody can say the standards don't exist. The hard part is inventory, migration, testing, and getting the usual federal “we need another decade” crowd out of the way.
