There you have it! The Pentagon just announced ChatGPT and Grok are now live on GenAI.mil for 3 million people. Emil Michael, R&E are taking a victory lap.
Let me tell you what actually shipped.
Rewind to last October. Emil Michael stood up and promised all four frontier models on GenAI.mil in 30 days.
Thirty days. That was almost a year ago.
Here is the scoreboard a year later: three models, not four. He banned the fourth because of his incompetence and ego. And the three he did land are months behind what's already running on the government and classified side.
But the real tell is what this platform is. It is not a platform.
It's a login page with three links on it. Click one, you're on OpenAI's chat window. Click another, you're on xAI's. Click a third, you're on Google's. Three separate vendor websites wearing a .mil badge.
There is no integration. No shared context. No way to run one model against another. No real advanced agentic framework — the thing that actually does the work. It's three chat boxes and a press release.
I was running multi-model agentic systems on government classified networks two years ago across all models. Real orchestration. Agents doing the work, not a human typing into a box and copy-pasting the answer. What the Pentagon just "launched" is less capable than what we had operational 24 months ago.
That is not progress. That is a regression with a ribbon on it.
And R&E is out here acting like they crossed a finish line. A year late. A model short. A generation behind. Calling a bookmark folder a breakthrough.
Three million warfighters deserve the frontier. They got a shortcut menu.
