There you have it! The company that just got Anthropic's best models shut down by the U.S. government is also Anthropic's single largest investor. Amazon.

Let me walk you through how this actually happened.

Amazon researchers ran "jailbreak" tests on Fable 5. They concluded it could be prompted into producing information useful for cyberattacks. Then Andy Jassy personally carried those findings to senior officials. Hours later, the Commerce Department ordered Anthropic to cut off Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all foreign nationals. Anthropic couldn't verify citizenship user by user in real time, so the models went dark for everyone.

A competitor did research on a rival's product, walked it into the West Wing, and the rival's product got killed.

Now read who benefits.

Amazon is Anthropic's biggest backer and its direct competitor. Both at once. Their research fed straight into a government order that took out the most capable models their rival ships. Nobody in this chain — not Amazon, not the administration — has addressed that conflict out loud.

And the "jailbreak"? Katie Moussouris, one of the most credible security researchers alive, reviewed the paper and said plainly: "It's not a jailbreak." Anthropic says the exact same vulnerabilities sit inside GPT 5.5 and every other frontier model. Their argument is simple: apply this standard across the industry and you halt every new model launch in America.

So why this company? Why these models? Why now?

This is the part that should scare every founder and every enterprise running American AI in production. If a competitor can phone the government and get your product switched off overnight, your stack is not yours. It belongs to whoever has the better lobbyist that week.

I have seen this before. Not with AI — with procurement, with vendors, with the slow knife of "security concerns" used to clear the field for the connected player. The tool changes. The game doesn't.

I am model-agnostic. I do not care whose logo is on the box. I care that the most powerful AI on the planet is being switched on and off by phone calls and conflicts of interest instead of clear, equal rules everyone has to live by.

China is not shutting its own models down to settle corporate scores. They are shipping.

Apply the standard to GPT 5.5 too, or admit it was never about the standard.
