Published July 13 in Nature Astronomy by Izaskun Jimenez-Serra at Spain's Centro de Astrobiologia. Two radio telescopes in Spain picked up its chemical signature in one of the most chemically rich regions ever catalogued.
This is the first true sugar ever detected in interstellar space, not inside a meteorite or on an asteroid, but floating freely in a cloud of gas and dust between stars.
Here is the part that got me. The standard chemistry model says molecules should grow one carbon at a time, so three-carbon sugars should have shown up first. They never did. The four-carbon sugar was there and the three-carbon version was nowhere to be found, at levels at least eight times below what the textbooks predicted.
An MIT astrochemist who was not involved said the result defies expectations based on the chemistry we understand. Let that sink in.
Researchers estimate between half a million and 55 million tons of this sugar may have rained down on early Earth during the Late Heavy Bombardment roughly four billion years ago. Nobody is claiming this proves life came from space. But it does prove that a building block of life can assemble itself in the cold vacuum between stars without a planet, a star, or a drop of water anywhere nearby.
