There you have it! OpenAI just cut off Cursor. Not for cheating. Not for breaking a single rule. Because SpaceX bought them.
Read the reason in OpenAI's own words: "we cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service." That's it. Guilt by ownership. Cursor did nothing wrong — its new parent company is now a rival, so the models get shut off November 12.
Here's the part every engineering leader should tattoo on the wall.
Cursor didn't lose access because of anything it built or how it behaved. It lost access because of a business feud two boardrooms up. A change-of-control clause fired, and a four-year partnership ended in one blog post.
Now imagine your entire org runs on one vendor's model behind one vendor's harness. A merger you didn't make, a lawsuit you're not part of, a competitor you accidentally became — any of it can go dark overnight. Your developers wake up to a shutoff date they never negotiated.
I run a fleet of AI agents in production every day. They are NOT wired to one provider. On OpenClaw the model is a swappable part — Anthropic today, OpenAI tomorrow, Google after that, routed by the job, not by a contract. When one door slams, I change one line and keep shipping. That isn't a nice-to-have. That's the whole point.
This is exactly what I warned about in REPLACEMENT. You cannot assume your role is permanent under one employer, and you cannot assume your tooling is permanent under one vendor. Optionality is the only real security either way.
