There you have it! G7 leaders are now talking about a "trusted partners" scheme for access to American frontier AI models after Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 were pulled offline.
Let's be very clear.
Blocking China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, and adversarial actors from the best U.S. models makes sense.
Nobody serious is arguing the CCP should get unrestricted access to the most capable cyber, bio, and agentic systems on earth.
But taking a best-of-breed American model and creating uncertainty for U.S. companies, allied companies, allied governments, and trusted democratic partners is insane.
Fable was not a toy or another chatbot. It was a game changer for defensive security and agentic work.
When you are defending networks, triaging vulnerabilities, building secure software, automating security workflows, and fighting AI-enabled adversaries, you need the best model available. Not the second-best model because someone in Washington sent an unexplained directive on a Friday.
That is how you weaken the good guys.
U.S. companies, our allies, warfighters, cyber defenders, and builders all need reliable access to the best American models.
If the concern is adversary access, then write the rule. Define the legal authority. Publish the criteria. Create the trusted partner framework. Ban the countries and entities that should be banned.
But do not turn American AI leadership into a guessing game.
The worst possible outcome is simple: China keeps building, American companies lose trust, allies start demanding sovereign alternatives, and U.S. frontier labs become viewed as politically interruptible infrastructure.
That is NOT how we win.
