There you have it! For the first time on the record, a U.S. official just admitted we have weapons in orbit.

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink, Monday, on stage at the Air & Space Forces Association conference: "The United States now has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the joint force against hostile adversary action."

The Space Force backed it up. Offensive and defensive. Kinetic and non-kinetic. Then everyone went quiet on the details — what they are, how many, when they launched. Meink's own words: "That phrase was very well thought out."

Here's why this matters.

For decades, U.S. officials refused to even say the words "weapons in space" out loud. Too dangerous. Might start an arms race. That taboo just died on a conference stage.

And the reason it died has a name: China.

The head of U.S. Space Command says China is moving "at jaw-dropping speed." A Chinese spaceplane already released a rogue mini-satellite that maneuvered around another spacecraft — analysts called it a rehearsal for orbital combat. Chinese engineers have filed patents for satellites with capture nets and autonomous "dogfighting" moves.

Dogfighting. In orbit. That is not science fiction anymore. That is a patent filing.

Meink said it plainly when reporters asked if going public helps Beijing: "Is there any question in the room by anybody about whether or not the Chinese and Russians have been developing these sorts of weapons?"

No. There isn't.

Space is now a warfighting domain. The people who pretend otherwise are the same people who told you the last domain would stay peaceful too.
