They didn't just build models that rival ours. They gave them away.

Here's what happened. Moonshot AI dropped Kimi K3. Alibaba dropped Qwen3.8-Max-Preview. Both open-weight. Both free to download, modify, and run with no license fee to OpenAI or Anthropic. A fraction of the cost. And that's not two lucky startups. Tencent's Hunyuan, Zhipu, MiniMax, DeepSeek before them — a whole ecosystem, all at once.
One download. No license. No invoice.
Now watch what it did to our own side.
Silicon Valley is not united. Nvidia's Jensen Huang went to Capitol Hill to keep open models available. Microsoft, Meta, and Palantir signed a letter telling Congress not to restrict them. On the other side: OpenAI and Anthropic, warning about security risks — while their entire business depends on charging for the proprietary access those free Chinese models undercut. The companies selling the shovels want the mines wide open. The companies selling the gold want the border closed.
Washington is just as split. Treasury's Scott Bessent floated sanctioning Chinese AI firms over alleged IP theft — an allegation, no charge, no finding. Commerce's Howard Lutnick is getting letters from American founders begging him not to cut off the open models their products are already built on top of. You can't sanction your way out of software thousands of developers already downloaded.
So there's no strategy. No sanctions. No rules. Just division, with real market share on the table.
