China Threat AI Cybersecurity
There you have it! BREAKING NEWS! Two weeks ago Commerce shut Anthropic's frontier models off on national security grounds. On Friday, Howard Lutnick signed a letter partially turning some of them back on.

Here is exactly what happened, kept clean:

FACT: Mythos 5 is now cleared for 100+ named U.S. companies and federal agencies — and their foreign-national employees. Export licensing waived, but only for the names on the annex.

FACT: Fable 5, the consumer model, stays dark. No date. Lutnick's letter doesn't even mention it.

FACT: Anthropic's price for getting back online is a written commitment to work with the government on a pre-clearance regime for every future release. OpenAI shipped GPT-5.6 the same Friday under the same restricted, government-blessed rollout.

Now the part that should worry you.

We just built a system where Washington decides — company by company, name by name — who gets access to the most capable AI on earth. No congressional mandate. Export-control law written for missile parts, repurposed overnight for software. A whitelist of 100, picked through a process nobody outside the room can see. If you're not on the annex, no one will tell you why.

I have lived inside this machine. The lesson never changes: the moment you turn a security tool inward on your own builders, the adversary doesn't slow down. They sprint.

Watch who's sprinting. Zhipu's GLM 5.2 is open-source. It can't be revoked. It needs no license, no annex, no Friday letter. It sits within a single point of Opus 4.8 on agentic benchmarks at roughly one-fifth the cost — and it's getting adopted faster than DeepSeek did. Every week our best models stay gated behind a government list, China's free one wins another enterprise shopping on intelligence-per-dollar.

The security concern is real. Frontier models with offensive cyber capability are genuine dual-use technology. I'm not pretending otherwise.

But you don't win a race by handcuffing your own runners and hoping the opponent trips. President Trump is an awesome negotiator (whether you like it or not) — put commercial AI to work FOR American power, don't ration it like a Cold War export.

We keep mistaking control for security. China is counting on it.
