There you have it. BREAKING NEWS! Dan Driscoll is stepping down as Secretary of the Army.
Before the headlines turn this into a palace-intrigue story, let me say the part that actually matters. This man was exceptional. He did an incredible job. And he will be missed.
Look at the record, not the drama.
An Iraq War veteran who actually wore the uniform. Confirmed by the Senate 66-28 in February 2025. They called him the "drone guy" because he ripped through the red tape strangling drone and counter-drone contractors — the exact fight our Army has to win before the next war, not after it. He pushed readiness and lethality when both had become slide-deck words instead of real capability.
And here is the one most people will scroll past: Trump sent him to help negotiate a peace framework between Russia and Ukraine. A service secretary doing statecraft. You don't hand that to a placeholder. You hand it to someone you trust in the room.
Even the White House statement on his way out called him "highly effective." That's the rare Washington exit where both the praise and the record agree.
Roughly 23 months of real work. Faster drones. Sharper focus. A seat at the hardest table in the world.
I'll just say this plainly: he did more for this country than most people ever will. Thank you, Dan.
