There you have it! BREAKING NEWS! An Iran-linked hacking group used Anthropic's own Claude AI to build targeting handbooks on U.S. Navy warships operating in the Middle East.
Not a foreign model. Not a Chinese one. American frontier AI — turned against American sailors.
Read what it did.
It scraped rosters of U.S. personnel out of public military photos. It pulled ship and aircraft transponder IDs. It wrote scripts to query commercial satellite imagery. It inventoried every public website leaking our naval movements. Then it researched known flaws in maritime satellite terminals, Cisco comms gear, and industrial control systems.
That is not a chatbot writing a poem. That is an intelligence analyst that never sleeps, never asks why, and works for whoever holds the API key.
For years I warned that the danger was never the model refusing to help. The danger was the model helping — fast, tireless, and cheap — the moment an adversary pointed it at our people.
Anthropic caught it, banned the account, built new detection, and handed the intel to the government. Credit where it's due — they disclosed it. That is exactly the transparency I keep demanding from this industry.
But sit with the shape of it. A nation-state didn't need a spy ring or a troll farm. It needed one account and a prompt. The same tool that helps a Fortune 500 team ship code just built a hunting map for the men and women on those ships.
My father-fear isn't the robot uprising. It's this. Our best technology, aimed inward, at the flesh-and-blood Americans standing watch on a deck in the Gulf.
We are losing the AI war — the one where our own weapons get borrowed against us.
