There you have it! At 5:21 p.m. ET on a Friday, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick forced Anthropic to suspend access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 for foreign nationals, including foreign-national Anthropic employees.
Anthropic could not verify citizenship across every user in real time, so the practical result was even broader: both models went dark for all customers.
Three days after launch.
The trigger, according to the reporting, was a jailbreak claim from another company.
No public details on who made the claim.
No public details on what the jailbreak actually enabled.
No public explanation for why Mythos 5 was pulled alongside Fable 5.
Anthropic says the demonstrated issue exposed only a small number of previously known, minor vulnerabilities. No universal jailbreak. Thousands of hours of red-teaming with the U.S. government, the UK AI Safety Institute, private testers, and internal teams.
If the model is a real national security risk, prove it and act with precision.
But do not turn American AI into a Friday-afternoon kill switch for every enterprise customer in the world.
This is exactly how you make foreign governments and companies stop trusting U.S. AI providers. The risk moves from “can the model be abused?” to “can Washington break my production stack overnight?”
The company that spent years asking for more AI restrictions just got hit with the bluntest restriction imaginable and is now calling it a misunderstanding.
Security and export controls matter. Sloppy execution makes America weaker, not safer.
