There you have it! Apple just warned people in 110 countries that their own phones may already be spying on them — and this time the alert landed on the Lock Screen, not buried in an email nobody opens.
110 countries in one wave. More than 150 since 2021.
This isn't a hacker in a hoodie. This is "mercenary spyware" — surveillance tools built by private companies and sold to governments to hunt specific people. Journalists. Activists. Politicians. Diplomats. Millions of dollars per target.
Someone is paying a fortune to get inside one specific person's pocket.
And here's the part that should stop you cold: Apple won't name the spyware, and won't name the government behind it. Their reasoning is real — publish the detection recipe and the vendors just tune around it. But sit with what that means. A market exists, at industrial scale, to weaponize the most personal device you own — and the people footing the bill get to stay anonymous.
Remember Poland. That entire spyware-abuse scandal — a government caught surveilling its political rivals — only unraveled because a handful of people took an Apple alert seriously and asked for help. One notification pulled a thread that exposed the whole thing.
So if you ever see one: don't panic, don't ignore it. Update your device, turn on two-factor, and if you're anywhere near a target profile, switch on Lockdown Mode — Apple says it has yet to see a confirmed hack of a device running it. And verify any alert straight at account.apple.com, because the scammers are already faking these.
