There you have it! AI exoskeletons just left the gadget aisle and walked onto the battlefield.
While a New York Post reviewer was racking up 30,000 steps around Prospect Park with an AI exoskeleton strapped to her waist, Ukrainian soldiers were wearing nearly identical hardware to load CAESAR Howitzer shells under live fire in Pokrovsk.
Same gear. Same Amazon listing. Two completely different worlds.
Ukraine's 7th Air Assault Corps posted the video in April. AI-enabled waist and leg braces. Soldiers moving faster, carrying more, lasting longer. The U.S. Army is running its own trials right now. Lockheed locked in its ONYX exoskeleton program nearly a decade ago.
Here is what changed. The thing that always killed this technology was calibration — 30 to 60 minutes per soldier, in a lab, fitting each suit to one specific body. A non-starter for war.
Researchers at NC State, funded by the NSF, cracked it. One AI control policy trained in simulation. Multiple users. Walking, running, stairs, no lab. The NSF called it "a major advance in exoskeleton engineering."
That is the whole game. Without it you fit every soldier for a bespoke mechanical suit. With it, you issue exoskeletons like body armor.
Read that again. We just turned the human soldier into a human-machine platform.
And it does not stop at the legs. GDIT and AWS are field-testing an AI energy-management platform — Project Celerity — at the Baja 1000 as a proxy for contested logistics. The Army is investing in tactical microgrids to keep drones, robots, and now powered soldiers running in the field. Power management. Predictive maintenance. Autonomous load carriage.
The warfighter is becoming a platform. Body armor, logistics, load — all of it getting an AI layer welded on.
And the countries that integrate AI into the body — not just the cloud — are the ones who win the next war. China is racing on this. Russia is racing on this. Ukraine is doing the live-fire R&D for free.
The war in Ukraine compressed a decade-long R&D cycle into a live-fire sprint. The data is being generated in mud and blood, at zero cost to the American taxpayer, and whoever harvests it first sets the standard for the next twenty years.
