AI Workforce
There you have it. 92,000 tech workers fired in five months. 864 people per day. 98 companies. And CNN runs a headline yesterday: "AI Isn't Actually Taking Your Job."
JOKES WRITE THEMSELVES.
Meta. Microsoft. Amazon. Cloudflare. Coinbase. These aren't startups folding in a downturn. These are the most profitable companies on the planet — spending $725 BILLION on AI infrastructure while handing pink slips to the humans who built the products that got them there.
April alone: 45,000 gone. The worst month for tech layoffs in two years. And the same McKinsey partner CNN quotes says AI can automate 57% of work activities but don't worry — it's just "pieces and parts" of jobs.
Pieces and parts. Tell that to the 92,000 who lost ALL the pieces and ALL the parts.
I have seen this before. The language is always the same. "Restructuring." "Rightsizing." "Efficiency gains." Translation: fewer humans, more output. The math is not complicated. A $200-a-day AI agent doesn't need health insurance. Doesn't take PTO. Doesn't file complaints. And it works 24/7/365.
900,000 tech workers laid off since 2020. Nine hundred thousand. And the replacement wave hasn't even started. Most companies haven't deployed AI agents at scale yet. When they do — and they will — that number is going to look quaint.
This is Chapter 6 of my book REPLACEMENT. I call it "The Denial Machine." The playbook: tell people their jobs are safe while you quietly automate them out. CNN ran this exact script yesterday. The book drops July 28.
BREAKING NEWS: I'm doing a book signing on July 30 at Busboys & Poets (450 K St NW, Washington DC). 5:30 to 7:30 PM. There will be a very special surprise "co-signer" with me that night. You don't want to miss it. Spots are limited to 200 — register now: https://lnkd.in/g9gg_TVD
